Stormtrooper Animation

For this animation, while the Star Wars franchise is one I hold little familiarity with, I wanted to capture the spirit of the films whilst equally meeting the brief requirements of achieving realism in its motion. In referencing, scenes involving the death of stormtroopers from the films were utilised, mixed with live action and stock footage.

Starting with a blockout of the planned animation, involving the main poses and keyframes the character was planned to have. A lot of the poses within this blockout was altered or changed by the end of the animation, and it is speculated that adding in-between frames during the blocking out would have helped in better plotting out the final animation, alongside aiding in a smoother transition to altering the interpolation of the in-between frames.

In this early playblasted iteration of the animation, the movement of the feet are fairly stiff, wit the character shuffling from the wall. This would be improved upon largely in later animations, while this still served as the basis for the full animation, with the later parts of it only receiving minor adjustments.

In the next iteration, made after receiving feedback, the flow of the character's movements along with its posing were improved upon, with the animation of the grenade being animated along an arc for a more realistic weighting in the timing of its bounces, and while the grenade does not appear in the final render, in the Playblast it helps to provide additional context to the scene.

In the final render, made using Marmoset Toolbag, a simple material made in Substance Designer was quickly added to the flooring and the wall, the character's base materials working well with a PBR rendering. Once each angle was rendered, they were compiled together in Adobe Premiere Pro for a full video.
